That doesn’t mean your passport is all you need. At immigration control you may be asked for proof that your trip is for tourism, so it’s best to have everything ready.

In this guide we go over the documents, what happens when you arrive, how long you can stay and some practical tips. If you travel on a package, much of the paperwork (tickets, hotel, transfers) is already taken care of: Planet Travel’s Mexico packages from Uruguay include flights, transfers and accommodation.

Do Uruguayans need a visa for Mexico?

No. According to the Embassy of Mexico in Uruguay, Uruguayan citizens can enter without a visa as visitors, as long as the stay does not exceed 180 days and they don’t engage in paid activities in the country. This applies to tourism and also to short business trips or unpaid study.

Watch out for one detail: 180 days is the maximum possible, not what is granted automatically. The immigration officer decides how many days to authorize when you enter, generally based on the length of your trip.

If your trip has another purpose, such as working or living there, the situation is different and you need to check with the Mexican consulate before traveling.

Documents you need to bring

Valid passport

It’s the only valid travel document: the Uruguayan identity card (cédula) is not accepted for entering Mexico. The guide from the Embassy and the Consulate General of Uruguay in Mexico recommends that your passport be valid for at least six months from the end of your stay, in good condition and with blank pages for stamps. Some Mexican sources are less strict about minimum validity, but the safest recommendation is to meet the six months.

What immigration may ask for

Uruguay’s Foreign Ministry states that, in addition to your passport, at the immigration checkpoint you may be asked for:

A round-trip ticket, with a return date within the period of your trip.

An accommodation booking, or a letter of invitation if you’re staying at someone’s home.

Proof of financial means for the whole stay: credit cards, cash or bank statements.

If you’re staying with friends or family, the letter of invitation should include your details, those of your host with their contact phone number, the address where you’ll be staying, your relationship, the dates and purpose of the trip, and the host’s signature.

Bring it printed and on your phone

Keep your bookings handy, printed or downloaded to your phone, so you don’t depend on having a connection when you arrive. If you travel on a package, the hotel and transfer voucher works as proof of accommodation.

What happens when you land at the airport

Immigration control: you present your passport and may be asked simple questions: the purpose of your trip, how many days you’re staying, where you’re staying. Answer clearly and show your proof if asked.

Permit to stay: the officer stamps your passport with the authorized days. At some airports, such as Cancún, automated immigration gates issue a receipt with a QR code to download the digital Multiple Immigration Form (FMM). If you’re given an FMM, keep it until you leave the country.

Customs: all luggage is scanned. If you’re carrying more than USD 10,000 in cash or its equivalent, you must declare it.

If immigration refuses you entry, you have the right to ask to be put in touch with the Uruguayan consulate, although the consulate cannot reverse the decision.

Money, insurance and health

Money

The currency is the Mexican peso. The practical approach is to bring dollars to exchange and a credit card.

The Uruguayan consular guide suggests traveling with at least USD 500 per person or with cards with enough funds for your stay.

Let your bank know you’re traveling so they don’t block your card, and don’t keep all your cards and cash together.

Travel insurance

It isn’t an entry requirement, but it’s highly recommended. The Foreign Ministry suggests taking out travel medical insurance with the broadest possible coverage and declaring any pre-existing condition. In the Mexican Caribbean, make sure it covers water activities and offers good assistance during hurricane season, from June to November.

Medications and vaccines

If you’re bringing prescription medication, travel with your doctor’s prescription showing the patient’s name, the medication, the dose and the doctor’s details, and only the quantity needed for the trip. Products containing pseudoephedrine, ephedrine or codeine without a prescription are prohibited, as are vapes and products with THC or CBD.

As for vaccines, we found no mandatory vaccination requirement for entering Mexico as a tourist from Uruguay. Even so, it’s a good idea to check with the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), especially if your trip includes stopovers or destinations in other countries.

Special situations

Traveling with minors

If you’re traveling with children, bring their birth certificate. If the minor isn’t traveling with both parents, you need the minor’s travel permit from Uruguay’s National Immigration Directorate, apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If one or both parents have died, the corresponding apostilled death certificates are required.

Stopovers in other countries

There are no direct flights from Montevideo to Cancún, so you’ll make at least one stopover. Check the requirements of the connecting country: for example, if your stopover is in the United States, that country has its own documentation requirements, even in transit.

Taxes and fees you’ll come across

Non-Resident Fee (DNR) and airport taxes: on most international flights they’re already included in the ticket price.

Visitax (Quintana Roo): if you visit Cancún, Playa del Carmen or the rest of Quintana Roo, the state charges a tax on foreign tourists. It’s paid on the official portal visitax.gob.mx and you may be asked for the receipt when leaving the airport. Pay it only on the official site to avoid improper charges.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel to Mexico with my identity card?

No. To enter Mexico you need a valid passport. The Uruguayan cédula is not valid as a travel document to Mexico.

How many days can I stay in Mexico as a tourist?

Up to a maximum of 180 days, but the immigration officer decides on entry how many days you’re authorized. Usually they match the length of your trip.

Do I need to bring my return ticket?

Yes. You may be asked for your round-trip ticket at immigration control, along with your accommodation booking and proof of financial means.

Important: entry requirements may change. Before you travel, confirm them with Mexico’s National Institute of Migration, the Embassy of Mexico in Uruguay or Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If you want to travel with everything sorted, at Planet Travel we help you with flights, transfers, hotel and travel insurance. See our Mexico packages and ask us about your next trip.

What documents you need to travel to Mexico from Uruguay, what immigration may ask for when you arrive and practical tips to get in without surprises.

[176

post-7575","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destinations

Travel to Mexico from Uruguay: documents & requirements

<meta name="description" content="Traveling to Mexico from Uruguay: visa, passport, what immigration may ask for, FMM, money, insurance, minors and taxes.
