Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Costa Mujeres: which to choose for your type of trip
When you start looking at the Mexican Caribbean, three names come up again and again: Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Costa Mujeres. All three share the same turquoise sea and the same arrival airport, but the experience changes quite a bit depending on where you stay. A quiet couple’s trip is not the same as a getaway with friends or a vacation with kids.
In this guide we explain what each area offers, how long it takes to get there from the airport and which type of traveler each one suits. If you already know your travel style, you can go straight to our Mexico packages from Uruguay, which combine flights, transfers and all inclusive hotels in these three areas.
A practical note before we start: there are no direct flights from Montevideo to the Mexican Caribbean, so you’ll fly with one stopover and land at Cancún International Airport. From there, transfers go out to all three areas.
The three areas at a glance
- Cancún (Hotel Zone): a long strip of hotels between the sea and the Nichupté lagoon. It’s the most classic option, with plenty of large hotels, nightlife and excursions leaving every day.
- Playa del Carmen: a smaller town, about 50 to 70 km to the south depending on where you start, built around the pedestrian Fifth Avenue. It has more street life and is better located for exploring the Riviera Maya.
- Costa Mujeres: a newer area north of Cancún, facing Isla Mujeres, with large resorts and calmer beaches. It’s designed for staying in the hotel and relaxing.
Cancún: the most complete option for a first trip
Cancún’s Hotel Zone is shaped like a “7” and runs end to end along Kukulcán Boulevard. In the northern part the sea is usually calmer, and along the long stretch facing east there are more waves, something to keep in mind if you’re traveling with kids or don’t like rough water.
Who it suits
- First-time visitors who want everything close at hand.
- Groups of friends looking for nightlife: the Punta Cancún area is packed with clubs and bars.
- Those who want to do lots of excursions: tours leave from Cancún to Isla Mujeres, Chichén Itzá, cenotes and theme parks.
What you need to know
The transfer from the airport is short, about 20 to 40 minutes depending on where the hotel is. Traffic on the boulevard can be slow at rush hour, so it’s best to choose your hotel based on what you’ll be doing most often.
Playa del Carmen: for walking, eating out and getting around the Riviera Maya
Playa del Carmen has a different vibe: fewer hotel towers and more of a town. Fifth Avenue, a pedestrian street parallel to the sea, is lined with restaurants, shops and bars, and you can stroll it by day and by night.
Who it suits
- Couples and travelers who like to leave the hotel to walk around and try restaurants.
- Those who want to visit Tulum, Cozumel, the Xcaret and Xel-Há parks or the cenotes to the south, which are closer than from Cancún.
- Travelers who combine all inclusive with days exploring on their own.
What you need to know
The transfer from Cancún airport takes about an hour. Many all inclusive resorts in the area are in developments such as Playacar, south of downtown, or on the coast between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos. If you want to walk to Fifth Avenue, check the exact location before choosing.
Costa Mujeres: quiet resorts and views of Isla Mujeres
Costa Mujeres, also called Playa Mujeres by some hotels, is a stretch of coast north of Cancún that has been developed in recent years with spacious resorts, many of them with large pools, kids’ clubs and adults-only options.
Who it suits
- Families who want everything inside the hotel and a generally calmer sea.
- Honeymooners looking for rest and few crowds.
- Those who put the resort ahead of going out to explore.
What you need to know
The transfer from the airport takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Outside the hotels there’s little within walking distance, so to go out for dinner or shopping you’ll depend on taxis or tours. On the other hand, Isla Mujeres is very close by ferry and is one of the easiest excursions to add.
How to choose based on your type of trip
- Honeymoon or couple: Costa Mujeres if you want total rest; Playa del Carmen if you like going out to dinner and walking.
- Family with kids: Costa Mujeres or the northern part of Cancún’s Hotel Zone, for the calmer sea and hotels with kids’ clubs.
- Group of friends: Cancún, for the nightlife and the variety of excursions.
- Trip to explore: Playa del Carmen, for its location in the middle of the Riviera Maya.
- First trip to the Mexican Caribbean: Cancún, because it gives you a bit of everything and short transfers.
Another option is to combine: a few nights in Playa del Carmen to explore and the rest at an all inclusive in Costa Mujeres or Cancún to relax before heading home.
Weather, sargassum and hurricane season
All three areas share the same climate, so this doesn’t decide where to stay, but it does affect when to travel:
- Sargassum: a seaweed that reaches the coast mainly between April and October, with more of it in the middle months. It varies a lot from year to year and from beach to beach. Beaches facing Isla Mujeres and the northern part of Cancún usually get less.
- Hurricanes: the Atlantic season runs from June to November, with more activity toward the end of the northern hemisphere summer. Getting travel insurance with good coverage is key in those months.
- Most stable season: between December and April there’s usually less rain and less sargassum, although it’s also the peak-demand season.
